Israel Chemicals workers threaten to intensify sanctions

The Rotem Amfert workers committee alleges that management has taken "a step backwards", and is insisting on firing four more employees.

The Rotem Amfert Negev workers committee is threatening to intensify it struggle against the management of Israel Chemicals Ltd. (TASE: ICL) next week, after the failure to reach understandings on voluntary retirement.

Over the past week, Rotem Amfert's workers committee held quiet talks with management to implement December's proposal agreed to between the company and the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel). The workers committee said that is willing to adopt the proposal on the voluntary retirement of 115 employees at improved terms. The workers committee alleges, however, that management has taken "a step backwards", and is insisting on firing four employees. The workers committee is worried that this is an attempt to set a precedent for future layoffs at other Israel Chemicals units, including Dead Sea Works.

A source at Israel Chemicals said today that the four employees facing firing "will be fired no matter what, because they have not fulfilled their jobs properly. There is a limit to what the company is willing to give and to whom. There is an agreement with the Histadrut on voluntary retirement at exorbitant terms."
