The EU-sponsored MUltimedia Framework For INteroperability in Secure (MPEG-21) Environments, (MUFFINS) project will develop a framework to deliver secure content over public networks.

Digital streaming solutions developer Optibase, Ltd. (Nasdaq:OBAS), has joined leading European technology companies and research institutes to develop a multimedia framework that will enable the search and secure delivery of digital content on the public network, while protecting the rights of digital content owners (DRM) and the privacy of consumers.

Funded by the European Commission, the MUltimedia Framework For INteroperability in Secure (MPEG-21) Environments, (MUFFINS) project brings together leading companies including Optibase, Philips, ITRI and Sun Microsystems, research institutes: IMEC and FRAUNHOFER IIS and the universities Imperial College London and the University of Ljubljana.

Members of the project will address issues involving the search and delivery of digital content over public networks while utilizing various technologies such as encryption, compression, rights and access management. The project has recently begun and is planned to be an introduction for a larger project planned for the next Framework that will be open for proposal submission by the end of 2002.

"We are proud to have been selected with our partners by the commission," said David Sackstein, senior vice president Research and Development, Optibase. "The advancement of digital content usage is highly dependent upon securing interests of both content owners and content end-users. We hope that the accomplishments of this consortium will propel this usage even further."
