Netanyahu signs general permit for trade with Iraq

Israeli businesspeople say they see potential in commercial ties.

Minister of Finance Benjamin Netanyahu today signed a general permit authorizing trade with Iraq, in line with an order stating that Iraq should no longer be regarded as a hostile country. Until today’s order was signed, Iraq was included in a list of hostile countries, with which trade was forbidden.

Today’s authorization was coordinated with Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom, and includes commercial and financial links with Iraq, particularly the supply and transportation of goods, and the payment and transfer of funds.

Netanyahu said that he had signed the permit after meeting with many businesspeople, who expressed their readiness to conduct commercial ties with Iraq, and explained the business potential of such links.

As of now, no trade whatsoever is taking place between the two countries.
