Power Paper to license Motorola RFID smart label technology

The printable radio frequency identification labels will enable users to monitor supply chains remotely.

Power Paper Ltd. today announced that it will license Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) BiStatix technology for use in a new radio frequency identification (RFID) smart label system. The company, which develops printable microelectronic devices, said that combination of Motorola’s technology with Power Paper’s printable, micro-power source paves the way for the ultimate low-cost printable RFID label.

Power Paper’s PowerID division develops smart active RFID label systems, which enable users in a wide variety of industries to gain greater product authentication and control over their supply chain by remotely monitoring, processing, storing and transmitting data over extended communication ranges.

Motorola’s BiStatix technology utilizes a unique and patented RFID communications system based on capacitive coupling, which uses printed carbon ink for the RFID antenna, contributing to greatly reduced label costs. The capacitive coupling method also brings increased packaging flexibility and materials compatibility, allowing RFID labels to be attached to a wide variety of items.

Based on its own micro-power source and the BiStatix technology, Power Paper is developing its PowerID Printalix system to be a high value, cost-effective semi-active label system, opening vast new markets due to the low price. The labels can be applied, or printed onto, packaging for all retail goods, food, pharmaceuticals, postal items, and smart forms and tickets, among others.

“We’re thrilled to be aligned with an RFID pioneer like Motorola,” said Shalom Daskal, Power Paper CEO. “We see great potential for the PowerID Printalix system and expect that it will become an alternative to the bar code.”

SVP Motorola Janiece Webb said, “Motorola is excited to work with Power Paper to add BiStatix technology to the portfolio of RF solutions from which we will draw to provide secure, intelligent asset tracking systems for the supply chain.”
