Diplomatic sources: Israel won’t ask for more US aid now

For now, Israel will probably try to obtain financing for its disengagement from Gaza from European countries.

At this stage, Israel does not plan to ask the US for economic aid to cover either all or part of the cost of its disengagement from Gaza under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan, Washington diplomatic sources told “Globes” tonight.

The sources said that given the budget difficulties in the US, which is in the middle of a war in Iraq, there was no chance that Congress would approve such aid, despite the friendship towards Israel shown by both houses.

”At a time when the US federal budget deficit is soaring, a request from Israel for a supplement to its annual aid from the US will not meet a favorable reception,” the sources said.
