Motorola Ventures, JGV invest in personal display developer Lumus

Lumus's LOE technology enables viewers to see full color displays without a screen.

Start-up Lumus today announced closure of a Series B financing round. The amount of funding was not disclosed.

Motorola Ventures, the venture capital arm of Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) led the investment, joined by Jerusalem Global Ventures.

Founded in 2000, Lumus has developed a revolutionary optical imaging technology. The light-guide optical element, called LOE, enables very compact, personal displays in various configurations.

LOE is essentially a flat, small, transparent plate. Images from small and miniature sources, such as LCD, LCoS or OLED devices, are projected into the plate. A set of reflective components reconstruct the image, projecting it directly into the viewer’s eye. The LOE turns small images into large images, in a large field of view, enabling the viewer to see a screenless full color display equivalent to a large, distant screen.

Based on an invention by Dr. Yaakov Amitai, co-founder and CTO of Lumus, the LOE facilitates mobile wearable, near-to-eye displays; hand-held screens suitable for a pocket PC or a mobile phone; as well as full performance head-up displays.

The company stated that the first two configurations address the need for high-quality, ultra-compact displays for mobile and portable applications, while the latter provides solutions for automotive and aerospace applications.
