Mofaz approves cement plant at Sufa crossing

The approval is subject to security considerations.

Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz today approved a plan for a cement manufacturing and packing plant at the Sufa crossing between Israel and the West Bank.

During his visit today to the Nesher cement factory in Ramle, Mofaz gave the go-ahead for planning construction of the plant in the southern Israel, subject to security considerations.

Construction of the plant is slated for territory to be allocated by the Palestinian Authority (PA) for the purpose. The plant is expected to employ 150 Palestinians.

Mofaz stated, “Diplomatic and security progress with the Palestinians must also be strengthened by tightening economic links between Israel and the PA, while providing maximum assistance for the Palestinian population.”

As part of the policy of helping the Palestinian population, Mofaz also approved several weeks ago a modern facility for unloading cement at the Almuntar/Karny crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, as an alternative to unloading sacks of cement from trucks. Mofaz’s office said that the facility would facilitate a rapid flow of large quantities of cement into the Gaza Strip for rebuilding infrastructure and buildings there. The new facility, now under construction, is slated for completion within two months.

Mofaz instructed Adv. Yosef Kelmer, his industrial advisor, to handle all matters pertaining to the facility, until it is put into operation.
