Bezeq Int'l inaugurates new undersea cable

The cable connecting Israel to Italy brings hope of lower Internet surfing prices.

Today, Bezeq International inaugurated its new undersea cable, which has begun full commercial operation. The company's customers were able to start surfing using the new cable, which connects Israel to the Internet hub in Italy at an investment of $100 million.

In recent years, Israel has been connected to the world via a single undersea cable belonging to MedNautilus. The new cable brings the hope that competition will lead to a fall in consumer Internet prices.

The cable was physically connected to Israel two months ago, and since then has undergone trials and a soft launch to test its performance. According to Bezeq International, from today, the new cable offers a dramatic improvement in Internet speeds and in the general surfing experience.

Tamares Telecom has begun laying a third cable, which will connect Israel to Cyprus, and from there to an international cable network. The cable-laying ship anchored in Haifa this week, and began work.
