Shalom supports disengagement plan

Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom: "I support the plan, but with a heavy heart, as my wish is to bring about unity".

Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom today announced his support for the disengagement plan put forth by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

After several long days of consideration, during which time he seemed inclined to announce his opposition to unilateral withdrawal, and only after receiving clarification from the prime minister, Shalom decided to join the roster of ministers who support Sharon's plan.

At a media conference today, Shalom said, "I support the plan, but with a heavy heart, as my wish is to bring about unity".

Shalom believes that implementing the disengagement plan will balance out the regional political-security situation. "We are set to make a decision about dismantling [certain] settlements in order to further other [settlements]".
