Dmitry Medvedev will land in Israel today and visit the Volcani Institute tomorrow.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is visiting Israel today, and will meet President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and opposition leader Isaac Herzog (Zionist Union) tomorrow. Following these meetings, he and his entourage will visit the Volcani Institute to learn about advanced Israeli technology that can increase agricultural production and better its quality.

The new technologies and developments to be presented to Medvedev on his visit include an innovative robot in the development stages designed for use in spraying agricultural fields and crops in hothouses. The robot is slated to reach the market in three-five years. The Russian prime minister will also be shown a new tool for testing the sugar level in apples.

According to the Volcani Institute, this tool will help farmers decide when to harvest their apple crops according to the sugar level, whether to market the produce, and which market to send it to. The device also makes it possible to detect the oil level in avocados. Its effectiveness in determining the ripeness of fruit like mango and papaya is also currently being tested. Volcani Institute scientists are also planning to show Medvedev their latest developments in the cattle sector, including sensors for monitoring the state of a cow and the quality of its milk output. The Russian prime minister will also be shown new wheat strains and storage solutions for wheat grains, now that many granaries have been exposed to pests that damage the quality of the produce stored in them.

Minister of Agriculture Uri Ariel will accompany Medvedev on the visit to the Volcani Institute. Ariel said, "There is significant progress in cooperation between Israel and Russia in general, especially in agriculture, as highlighted by Medvedev's visit. I believe that we will continue to make progress in our relations, and sign additional agricultural agreements, with an emphasis on the dairy industry and fruit and vegetable crops, to the benefit of Israel's economy and agriculture."
