Israeli start-up E2C, which is developing inter-faces for smartphones and tablets adapted for the elderly, has raised $1.3 million. The investors are the Explore. Dream. Discover incubator in Yokneam, TMT Investments, and Curious minds. Existing investors include Guy Edri, Gadi Angel and Gal Belinks. 18 months ago E2C launched its first product in Israel with LG smartphone importer Ronlight.
E2C launched its smartphone under the Basic smartphone brand name, based on an LG Android with an E2C inter-face. The inter-face controls the entire device and provides the elderly user with more convenient access to all the applications. The smartphone also includes a connection to the Natali medical call center and a security button allowing users to go outside of their homes and feel more secure during moments of distress, knowing that the smartphone will identify their exact location and call emergency medical services. The company has sold 10,000 units of its two models to date.
The basic smartphone allows users to interrupt calls through a remote loudspeaker, voice guidance, and remote warnings to family members even when the battery is weak. The smartphone also includes user-friendly access to information channels (such as news and sport0, picture galleries, including receiving new pictures through Whatsapp and email, and connection to Facebook through the simple inter-face. E2C plans selling smartphones in the US based on a similar operating concept.
E2C is set to launch its basic tablet product in Israel using HiSense's tablet. E2C provides the tablet with a unique and accessible Internet browser and several content platforms for users unfamiliar with the tablet.
E2C CEO Amir Alon said, "With the start of sales in Israel, we have succeeded in bringing about a huge revolution in making advanced technology accessible for the elderly. The elderly are the fastest growing market that has not been paid suitable attention. Technological solutions are designed for the younger generation but in reality all of us want to be up to date and linked to the most innovative technology. E2C's products allow this.
