The Purple Line will connect Tel Aviv and Yehud, and the Green Line will connect Rishon Lezion with Herzliya.

Minister of Transport and Intelligence Yisrael Katz has instructed NTA Metropolitan Mass Transit System Ltd. to bring the plans for the Tel Aviv Light Rail Purple and Green Lines to the cabinet for approval by the end of 2016.

After the National Planning and Building Commission for National Infrastructure approved the plan for the Purple Line, NTA published the plan for comments from the District Planning and Building Commission and for public objections. The 29-kilometer Purple Line will connect the areas east of metropolitan Tel Aviv (Ramat Gan, Kiryat Ono, Or Yehuda, and Yehud) with central Tel Aviv. "The transportation revolution is continuing. As I promised, we will soon start work on two more lines that will connect the central region with central Tel Aviv," Katz said. "The momentum in public transportation goes on, and after decades, metropolitan Tel Aviv will be connected with the mass transit system consisting of subways, above-ground trains, and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, just as in other modern cities around the world."

The Purple Line is composed of a central section beginning at the Savidor Railway Station and going along Arlosorov, Ben Yehuda, Allenby, HaAliya, Levinsky, Hahagana Sts. and Shalom Rd. (Tel Aviv); Aluf Sadeh Rd. (Givatayim-Ramat Gan); the Aluf Sadeh Interchange; and Sheba Rd.

From Sheba Medical Center (Tel Hashomer Hospital), the line divides into two. The northern section will go along Rafael Eitan and Katzir Sts. (Kiryat Ono), and Anna and Max Web up to the northeastern border of Bar Ilan University. The southern section will begin at Sheba Medical Center, continue along the Tel Hashomer army base (slated for removal), and go from there to Yehud, ending at Hatayasim Junction.

NTA also began last week publication of the Green Line plan for comments from the District Planning and Building Commission and for public objections, after the National Planning and Building Commission for National Infrastructure approved the plan for deposit.

The southern section of the Green Line will have two parts. The western part will begin in Rishon Lezion at Moshe Dayan Station. The eastern part will also begin in Rishon Lezion at the intersection with Highway 412. Both parts move through Holon along two arteries, and come together on Sokolov St. in central Holon. The lines continues northward from there by way of the Holon Junction to Har Tzion Blvd. in Tel Aviv and the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station area, and meets the Purple Line at the intersection of Har Tzion St. and Levinsky St. The route then moves underground through Carlebach Station, which is also used by the Red Line, continues along Ibn Gvirol St., meets the Red Line again at the intersection of Arlosorov St. and Ibn Gvirol St., and emerges above ground before crossing the Yarkon River on an elevated bridge.

The line splits into two sections at Einstein St. The eastern section moves along Einstein St. in the direction of Ramat Hahayal, and meets the HaAdafa artery at the intersection of Einstein St. and Namir Rd., from where it goes to Tel Aviv University and George Weiss St. and crosses the Ayalon Highway near Hayarkon Park and the Tel Aviv Convention Center, through Ramat Hahayal to Kiryat Atidim. The northern section continues parallel to the shore line to Sde Dov until the Herzliya industrial zone and the intersection of Abba Eban Blvd. and Naomi Shemer Blvd. 76 million passengers a year are projected for the line.
