Communications Minister approves WiFi, Bluetooth

Ehud Olmert: Use of these frequencies will widen the choice of end-use equipment and the deployment of W-LAN in Israel.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry Trade and Labor Ehud Olmert today signed an order pending for registration giving the public free unlicensed use to 2400-2483.5 megahertz frequencies as of October 31.

WiFi and Bluetooth are the main technologies using these frequencies. WiFi is used for PCs, cordless telephones, and building hotspots. Low frequency Bluetooth-equipped products are mainly used for wireless peripherals.

The Ministry of Communications website today published clarifications for manufacturers and imports regarding the permissible uses and how to apply for import and marketing permits for products. Olmert noted that opening the WiFi and Bluetooth frequencies for use will lead to significant development in the choice of end-use equipment and the deployment of wireless local area networks (W-LAN) in Israel.
