Freescale launches UWB-based LCD HDTV screen

The new television receives content via a wireless voice and video signals from a media server a system for wireless TV broadcasts.

Chip developer and maker Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (NYSE:FSL) has developed the world’s first ultra-wide band (UWB) liquid crystal display (LCD) high-definition television (HDTV) in cooperation with Haier Corporation, one of China’s largest consumer electronics company. The new television receives content via a wireless voice and video signals from a media server a system for wireless TV broadcasts.

The UWB LCD television can be placed in any room and moved anywhere, without a cord attaching it to any system, except for the electricity outlet. A single media service located in the home will broadcast to all televisions in it simultaneously. Freescale said the television will be launched in early 2006.

“This is the world’s first UWB-based consumer electronic product. It marks a new era for the consumer wireless experience,” said Freescale Semiconductor Israel general manager Shmuel Barkan.

Freescale was formerly Motorola Semiconductor, which Motorola (NYSE:MOT) spun off as an independent public company in May 2004, as part of a measure aimed at focusing on wireless communications. Freescale’s activities in Israel include a design center and marketing, sales and technical support for the company’s products.
