אחרי 61 שנה "אותרה" סוף סוף תמונתו של מנהיג המרד הבית"רי בגטו ורשה, פאוול פרנקל. למען האמת, לא מדובר בתמונה אותנטית של פרנקל שנמצאה פתאום, אלא בדיוקן ששורטט על ידי צייר קלסתרונים, על סמך עדויות שנגבו מאחרוני האנשים שהכירו אותו ועדיין חיים. מדובר ביוזמה של שר הביטחון לשעבר, משה ארנס, שהחליט "לגאול" את חלקם של הבית"רים במרד מתהום הנשייה ולכתוב מחקר גדול על המרד הבית"רי בגטו ורשה ב-1943. המחקר כולו אמור להתפרסם בשנתון המחקרי של מוסד "יד ושם" לקראת יום השואה, אבל ארנס אומר שכבר ברור לו שחלקם של הבית"רים - שפעלו בנפרד משאר המורדים, בהנהגתו של מרדכי אנילביץ', "משום שאנשי אנילביץ' ראו בהם פאשיסטים ולא הסכימו בשום אופן לפעול במשותף" - היה הגדול ביותר. "היה להם הרבה יותר נשק, כולל שתי מכונות ירייה, ובשלב מסוים, הם אפילו נתנו רימונים לחבר'ה של אנילביץ'", מספר ארנס. במסגרת מחקרו גילה ארנס שלא נותרה אף תמונה של פרנקל, שנהרג במרד. הוא החליט ליזום ציור של האיש על פי עדויות: "האם לא היית רוצה שתהיה לך תמונה של יהודה המכבי?" הוא מסביר את חשיבות התמונה בעיניו. באמצעות ידידים במשטרת ישראל הגיע אל גיל ג'יבלי, צייר הדיוקנאות של העיתון "גלובס". ג'יבלי עובד גם כצייר קלסתרונים בעבור המשטרה, הוא צייר את הקלסתרון שהביא לזיהוי ההרוג ה-17 בפיגוע האוטובוס במגידו, ובאחרונה התפרסם גם כמאייר הספר שכתב הרמטכ"ל לשעבר, רפאל איתן, לנכדותיו. ארנס הפגיש את ג'יבלי עם שלושת העדים האחרונים שהצליח לאתר מבין מכריו של פרנקל: ישראל ריבק, שהיה חניכו בקן בית"ר בורשה; מילכה רוזנצווייג, שהכירה אותו לפני המלחמה; ופלה פינקלשטיין, שהיתה פקודתו במרד. ג'יבלי ניסה לגרום להם לאמץ את זיכרונם ולתאר דמות שהכירו לפני יותר מ-60 שנה. לדבריו, השיטה שונה מבציור קלסתרון פלילי רגיל: "קודם כל, יש יותר זמן לתחקור. זו לא 'פצצה מתקתקת'. כמובן שקשה מאוד לפקס אותם על הדמות. עם ריבק הצלחתי יותר, ותיאורו היה הבסיס לדיוקן. מילכה התקשתה לזכור בעצמה, אבל אישרה לי מה שריבק אמר. היתה ביניהם מחלוקת אם היה לו שפם: ריבק ופלה זכרו שפם, מילכה לא. ציירתי שתי אופציות, אבל אני נוטה להאמין שהיה לו שפם, מכיוון שזה מתאים לתיאור הכללי שקיבלתי מהם, וגם מעצם העובדה שהפך למנהיג". פינקלשטיין - אז קשרית בת 18, כיום בת 79 - אומרת, מצדה: "אני זוכרת את הדמות שלו היטב, אבל בקווים כלליים. להגיד אם היו לו גבות רחבות או צרות, או לספר איזה אף היה לו - זה קשה לי. אז ג'יבלי הראה לי ציורים שעשה, ואני אמרתי אם זה נכון או לא". את הדיוקן הסופי שאליו הגיע ג'יבלי עדיין לא ראתה, אבל לטיוטות האחרונות העניקה את הציון 7, "כי זה נראה בערך מתאים, אבל לא היה לי שלם". לג'יבלי זהו הדיוקן החמישי שהוא משרטט של קורבנות או ניצולי שואה. בין היתר, הוא מספר, "היו לי פעם אח ואחות שביקשו שאצייר את הוריהם שנספו, כי התמונות שהיו ברשותם אבדו לאחר שספינת המעפילים שעליה הגיעו לארץ טבעה. היתה לי גם אשה מחיפה שידעה שיש לה דוד שנשאר בפולין, והיא רצתה לאתר אותו לפי תמונה. היתה לה תמונה אחרונה שלו ושל אחותו (אמה של הפונה) מגיל 14, אז הלכתי לפי קווי ההתפתחות של האחות, והערכתי שייראה כמוה, רק 10 שנים פחות. האשה פירסמה את הדיוקן שציירתי במקומון של העיר ברסלאו (בעבר עיר בגרמניה, כיום ורוצלב שבפולין), ששם היה ידוע שהוא חי. הוא הגיע לפגישה אתה, הכחיש שהוא יהודי, אבל סיפר שהוא יודע כמה מלים ביידיש 'מאיזה חבר'. כנראה שלא היה לו נעים לחשוף את זהותו מול המשפחה הנוצרית שהקים".

About my Patent

My name is Gil Gibli and I have developed a system for interrogation and compositing an image based on eye witness description which I have refined into a patent pending form. My first encounter with the common police methods brought me to the conclusion that something is wrong with systems based on scientific cognitive approach or relying on the eye witness' fine detail description. Throughout my seven years of working for the Israeli Police as the only composite sketch artist (drawing with a pad and pencil) I'm doing my best to prove that a good composite sketch can only be achieved by a qualified artist or by a software system based on artistic values. For the past seven years I have been testing my theory in order to apply it in to software system. Now I am interested in seeking partners for funding and research of this system and I would like to know if you could assist in this matter. I am seeking potential partners which could join forces with me in order to bring my theories into practice. Following is some background on my theory, the proposed system and my personal experience. Observations from my experience The eye witness is being confused by the variety of options offered by conventional systems which use examples and swatches that taint the witness' memory.The regular software kits combining facial elements lack the sense of wholeness and 3 dimensional sense of depth.The subjectivity of "likeness" could easily mislead the investigation and the public eye.The expectation for "likeness" is much greater then the regular software kits can produce.Average systems operators lack sense of controlling proportions. The concept behind my proposed system The system is training the eye witness to think in graphical terms of forms and volumes, in order to create a common language between the interviewer and the eye witness. The interrogation through basic graphical forms as opposed to realistic images enables the eye witness to relate to the interviewer without tainting memory or confusing the eye witness with alternate reality. The information supplied by the eye witness is "translated" from cubist forms into a progressively realistic solid portrait. The benefits of this new system Simplifies the process of questioning the eye witness without stressing or disturbing his cognitive ability and put the emphasis on crucial factors that have more probability to produce similarity of the target. Each step of the process is a category that defines the target. The process progresses from large "low-resolution" shapes into Background on the system's theory The system is based on twentieth century modern art values such as Impressionists objective observation, abstract figuration, Cubism.My years of experience in figurative drawing and Modern Art studies.Long experience working as a portrait artist in a business daily where I perfected the art of completing drawing from an incomplete photo and age progression from an old photo.Seven years of experimenting with forensic art methods and how to improve them Status of the system The interrogation method has been documented and is currently patent pending. I have produced a plan for developing the system as software which will deal with the interrogation process as well as rendering the final composite sketch. The software system should ease interrogation and compositing of eye witness based accounts and should provide the basis for a final rendering of the suspect. The system can output its rendered image to an imaging system for final touch-ups/additions. I am seeking funding for the software development. I would prefer to partner with organizations which could take part in field tests and reviews in order to ensure that the system is as accurate and as friendly as possible. . The Israel Police Force uses Gibli's services in creating composite sketches some of them helped to bring the criminals to justice and to find missing people .

Background on Me Portrait artist Gil Gibli was born in Tel Aviv in 1957. As a youngster, he grew up on a kibbutz in northern Israel. After a stint in the Israeli Navy in 1978, he began to paint. In 1982, Gibli moved to New York and studied painting and drawing at the New York Studio school for one year, subsequently continuing his studies in etching and lithography at the Pratt University Graphic Center. Upon graduating from Manhattan's Empire State College in 1987, he joined the prestigious Cartoonists Association. Gibli's first job was as an assistant to syndicated cartoonist Raanan Lurie, while at the same time developing his own unique style of illustration. Gibli's work has appeared in various publications in Israel and elsewhere but he is probably most closely identified with the Israeli business daily newspaper Globes. As Globes' in-house artist, Gibli has developed a technique of monochrome realist portraiture, employing the fine cross-hatching that has become his - and the newspaper's - trademark. Gibli is the winner of a United Nations cartoon contest. His most recent show was a retrospective of political and news portraits, drawings and caricatures.
