Israel Ports looks to keep Haifa Port deadline

The Carmel Port would be opened even though cranes will not arrive for two years.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Israel Ports Development & Assets Company Ltd. plans to allow the Carmel Port at Haifa Port Company Ltd. to begin operating in July or August 2008, despite severe delays in the procurement of cranes.

Israel Ports recently asked the Haifa Regional Planning and Building Commission to grant an operating permit for the Carmel Port as soon as construction work is completed this summer, even though the cranes are only due to arrive in early 2010. Haifa Port is responsible for this delay.

Under the Israel Port's plan, the 80-dunam (20-acre) Carmel Port will be used for the warehousing of containers in the meantime in order to alleviate the shortage of storage space at the Haifa Port.
