Gov't to invest NIS 110m in Jerusalem academic institutions

The plan calls for academic institutions to move operations to the city center.

The economic-social cabinet, chaired by Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz, yesterday approved NIS 110 million for academic institutions in Jerusalem over five years through 2016. The allocation followed a government decision to strengthen academic institutions in the capital.

The plan calls for academic institutions to move operations to the city center, which would increase student involvement there. For example, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design has reoccupied its old buildings and will build a new campus at the Russian Compound in the city center. The college moved many years ago to larger and modern premises at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Mount Scopus Campus.

Steinitz said, "The city should again become a focus of academe, a draw for creativity and an environment for leading-edge technology. We will increase the number of engineers and research infrastructure to attract young and fresh forces to the city."
