Lapid: I don’t have a detective agency

Finance Minister Yair Lapid dismissed calls for the establishment of a search committee to pick a worthy economist for the post.

"The prime minister and finance minister do not have a detective agency," said Minister of Finance Yair Lapid today in response to the embarrassments over the failed appointments of Prof. Jacob Frenkel and Prof. Leo Leiderman as the governor of the Bank of Israel.

Speaking at the inauguration of the high-speed train between Tel Aviv and Ashdod, Lapid dismissed calls for the establishment of a search committee to pick a worthy economist for the post. "If there had been a search committee, could it hire a detective agency?" he asked. "All the candidates were worthy and respected."
