IBM-ISS: Israel fourth largest source of phishers

There were 3.3% fewer new break-ins discovered in Internet applications in the first half of 2007 in the corresponding period of 2006.

The annual IBM-ISS report states that the number of new break-ins discovered in Internet applications totaled 3,273 in the first half of 2007, 3.3% fewer than in the corresponding period of 2006. This is the first drop in break-ins after ten years of steady growth.

ISS says that Israel is still high on the list of Internet security threats. Israel is the fourth largest source of phishers, accounting for 8.2% of all phishing attacks during the first half. Spain overtook South Korea as the largest source of phishers, accounting for 17.9% of all phishing attacks.

Trojan horses were the commonest type of computer break-ins, accounting for 28% of all attacks in the first half of 2007. The commonest type of attack in 2006 was downloaders, which automatically download files onto a computer. ISS also reported an increase in the use of malicious codes, which can be bought or leased, including by criminals.
