Luz II to launch pilot solar facility in Dimona

The project is intended to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the firm's technology.

Luz II Ltd. and its California parent, BrightSource Energy Inc. are collaborating on a solar energy pilot in Dimona. The project, a few megawatts in size, is intended to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the company's technology.

BrightSource and Luz II founder and chairman Arnold Goldman said, "Completion of this project crowns tens of thousands of hard work hours and the dedication by our people who are the most brilliant and dedicated team in the field. This is a certificate of honor for the power of the common vision of everyone who worked for this company, as well as our partners and suppliers."

The Dimona solar facility has more than 1,600 full-sized mirrors and a 60-meter power tower topped by a solar heater. The mirrors surround the tower focusing solar rays on the heater, heating the water to 550 degrees Celsius. In a commercial facility, the steam is transferred by pipes from the heating tank to a standard turbine. The company says that the system can generate electricity more efficiently and cheaply than other solar facilities.
