Salaries higher for women in high tech

The number of women employees in the high-tech industry more than doubled between 1995 and 2007.

A woman will work longer hours in high tech than a woman with a degree who does not work in high tech, and will earn less than her male peers in the same job, according to a survey for the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor for International Women's Day on March 8.

The survey refers to 2007. It found that 87,000 women worked in high tech, including services for the industry, such as lawyers, accountants, and consultants, amounting to 7% of all women employees in Israel, and compared with 39,100 women employees in high tech in 1995. Women as a proportion of all high-tech employees rose from 32.6% in 1995 to 34% in 2007.

38,400 women worked in technology jobs, such as technicians, engineers, chemists, and biochemists, in 2007, nearly triple the number in these jobs in 1995. Women as a proportion of all technology employees rose from 20.2% in 1995 to 24% in 2007.

The average gross monthly salary of a woman with a degree working in high tech was NIS 11,732 in 2007, 1.38 times the salary of a women with a degree working in other business sectors. The average gross monthly salary of a woman in a technology job was NIS 13,402, 57% higher than the salary of women in non-technology jobs in the high-tech industry, such as personnel managers or lawyers. The average salary of those workers was NIS 8,526.
