Water Authority to impose drought levy

Water saving devices and sand timers that will measure the length of showers will be distributed to the public.

The Water Authority today announced an emergency plan to impose a drought levy on anyone who exceeds their water quotas. The levy will not only apply to farmers, but to all Israeli residents.

Water Authority director Prof. Uri Shani added that water saving devices and sand timers that will measure the length of showers will be distributed to the public. He noted that unless there was an especially heavy rainy season, the situation would "worsen in the coming years."

At a press conference today, Shani said that the campaign against the over-consumption of water and about the falling water level of the Kinneret had reduced the public's water consumption.

The Water Authority will launch its 2009 PR campaign on Passover. The campaign slogan is expected to be, "We must save the Kinneret". The cost of the first wave of the ad campaign will be about NIS 5 million.
