modu to launch new 3.5G handset in 2010

The company had the soft launch of its modu 1 handset with Cellcom last month.

modu Ltd. plans to launch its modu 2 touch-screen telephone in 2010, a month after the soft launch of the modu 1 telephone with Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) last month.

Gadget news site "Pocket Lint" reports that modu is working on a new device that will have a full keyboard and 3.5G connectivity, compared with the 2.5G connectivity of the modu 1.

modu CEO Dov Moran said, "We've sold 1,000 handsets." He added that the full launch of the handset will be in October at Cellcom, and that the handset would be available in Russia, India, Greece, the Philippines, and in South American countries by the end of the year.

When asked why the modu 1 was not available in the US or UK markets, Moran replied, "The handset is not good enough for the demands of Americans or the British, who like to surf the web and stay connected."

Moran added that the modu planned to unveil the modu 2 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2010. He said that the modu 1 and modu 2 will probably not be sold in the same countries at the same time.
