Rains arrive, water workers stay home - on strike

The result will be difficulty in enforcing the drought tax.

With the arrival of the first rain, and perhaps because of it, 220 Water Authority workers went on strike today. They did not measure the depth of Lake Kinneret or that of the aquafiers.

As part of the strike, which was described as a "warning strike", workers refrained from regulation of water consumers and watering of gardens. The result will be difficulty in enforcing the "drought tax". In addition, licenses were not issued for farmers and local authorities.

Water Authority workers, backed by the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel), are disputing the fact that the government led structural changes in the water sector without consulting with the workers and without paying them for that. The workers complain that the structural changes doubled their workload and should lead to extra remuneration for employees.
