New regulations to flood market with US-built cars

It will be permitted to import vehicles from dealers, not just manufacturers.

The Ministry of Transport will present the final draft next week of the directive permitting alternative imports of vehicles to the Vehicle Importers Association, Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce and the Israel Consumer Council. Minister of Transport Israel Katz announced today that according to the new order vehicle imports to Israel will now not only be direct from the manufacturer as is mandatory today, but will also be through dealerships in certain circumstances.

The main innovation in the new import regulations is in allowing parallel importing of cars manufactured in the US by non-US automakers such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai and others. Sources in the sector believe that the new regulations will result in the flooding of the Israeli market by new models from the US that were not allowed to be marketed up until now. However, the new regulation will not permit the import of cars made in Europe and Japan but sold in the US.
