Cabinet backs Gantz as new IDF Chief of Staff

Benjamin Gantz is set to succeed Gabi Ashkenazi on February 14.

The cabinet today cancelled the appointment of Major General Yoav Galant as the new IDF Chief of Staff and gave its initial backing to the appointment of Major General Benjamin Gantz. Major General Benjamin Gantz is now likely to succeed Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi as the 20th IDF Chief of Staff on February 14.

The only minister who opposed the cancellation of Galant's appointmrent was Minister of National Infrastructures Uzi Landau.

Gantz's appointment will need to be approved by the Turkel Committee before being returned to the cabinet next Sunday for final approval.

The High Court of Justice this morning rejected Yoav Galant's appeal against the cancellation of his appointment.
