Cabinet passes Netanyahu's building plan

Shas ministers Eli Yishai and Ariel Atias collaborated with Netanyahu on the plan.

The cabinet today approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's emergency plan for accelerating residential construction, which is aimed at greatly increasing the housing supply and halt the rise in home prices. Shas ministers Minister of Interior Eli Yishai and Minister of Housing and Construction Ariel Atias collaborated with Netanyahu on the plan.

The National Housing Committees aim to bypass the local and regional planning and building commissions for an 18-month period. The Prime Minister's Office added that, until the legislation is approved, additional committees will be established alongside the existing district committees that will deal only with government plans.

Construction projects currently in the approval process will be specially marked as "plans for accelerated construction." A list of approximately 50,000 residential units will be renewed on an ongoing basis. When one plan leaves the list, due to its being approved, frozen or cancelled, another plan will be added in its place. The projects list will be determined by the government according to criteria that will be set in advance by the Ministry of Housing and Construction and the Israel Land Administration.
