Cabinet approves vacating Sde Dov Airport by 2018

The airport is zoned for 12,000 housing units, which will ease the city's housing shortage.

The cabinet today approved the vacating of Tel Aviv's Sde Dov Airport by 2018, accepting the recommendations of the inter-ministerial committee. Domestic flights by Arkia Airlines Ltd. and Israir Airlines and Tourism Ltd. to Eilat will be transferred to Ben Gurion Airport, using the area currently used by the Israel Air Force, which will transfer its operations there to the Negev.

An alternative airport for light planes will be built at Ein Shemer in the Sharon. The Ein Shemer landing field, built by the British during the mandate, was used for sports and agricultural flights until the 1990s.

Sde Dov Airport occupies 1,300 dunam (425 acres) along the coast in north Tel Aviv, including an 800-dunam (200-acre) military airfield. The airport is zoned for 12,000 housing units, which will ease the city's housing shortage.
