1,500 Jerusalem apartments approved despite int'l condemnation

The project is in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood.

Despite condemnation from the EU and sharp criticism from the US, Israeli construction in disputed Jerusalem neighborhoods continues. The Jerusalem Regional Planning and Building Commission's committee for completing projects yesterday approved the construction of 1,500 housing units in the northern neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo. The committee will discuss construction in the southern neighborhood of Gilo today.

Minister of Interior Eli Yishai welcomed the decision, saying, "The Ministry of Interior will continue to increase the housing supply for the entire population of Jerusalem and of the country. Approval of the plans is another important and positive step by the ministry to improve housing, while at the same time strengthening Jerusalem."

A Jerusalem Regional Planning Committee member said, "The freezing of development in the city, which has regrettably lasted for years, has come to an end with the approvals for construction, which will partly solve the city's housing shortage and the need for demographic balance."
