For the first time in Israel's history, Israel Police is recommending the indictment of a former IDF chief of staff.

For the first time in Israel's history, Israel Police is recommending the indictment of a former IDF chief of staff over the so-called "Harpaz Affair." The Lahav 433 police unit today finished its investigation of suspicions that Gabi Asheknazi and his assistants committed criminal acts when he was IDF chief of staff, among other things due to his poor relations with then-Minister of Defense Ehud Barak.

The police turned its investigation results over to the State Attorney's Office with a recommendation that several of those involved be indicted, including Ashkenazi, former Military Advocate General Avichai Mandelblit, former IDF spokesperson Avraham (Avi) Benayahu, and Colonel (res.) Erez Weiner, Ashenazi's adjutant.

The State Attorney's Office will make the final decision on whether to indict those involved, and the suspects will be summoned for a hearing before the decision is made.

In its announcement today, the police cited six related investigated affairs and their conclusions about each of one them.

Forgery investigation

In August-October, forgery of a document relating to the source of a document referred to as the "Harpaz document" was investigated. The police said that evidence that Boaz Harpaz had committed forgery under aggravating circumstances and obstruction of justice came to light during their investigation.
