Hungary to equip Gripen plane with Rafael Litening pod

The Litening advanced airborne infrared targeting and navigation pod has night vision capabilities.

The Hungarian Ministry of Defense has decided to equip its air force’s Gripen aircraft with the Litening advanced airborne infrared targeting and navigation pod. RAFAEL Armament Development Authority Ltd. manufactures the Litening pod in cooperation with Zeiss Optronik. The deal is worth $11 million.

The Litening pod has infrared night vision capabilities, and can be used for laser-guided and GPS-guided bombs. The system is used by the Israeli Air Force, F-16s and F-15s in the US Air Force, US Marine aircraft, and Germany’s Tornado plane. It is also in the process of being integrated in the Eurofighter plane.

A week ago, the US Congress approved a $37 million allocation for buying Litening pods.
