Communications, Finance Ministries spar over TV reform

The Communications Ministry does not want the Finance Ministry's proposals to be discussed today.

The Ministry of Communications opposes the inclusion of the reform of television broadcasting in Israel within the framework of the budget resolution to be considered at today's cabinet meeting. The ministry has put out a consultation paper detailing its view on the Ministry of Finance's proposal to allow advertising on cable and satellite television, offer satellite and cable television subscribers smaller channel packages, and switch to offering commercial channels to private sector operators by way of licenses rather than franchises.

In the paper, which has been circulated to ministers, the Ministry of Communications states, "Even if it is decided, against our opinion, to include the aforementioned proposal as part of the draft proposals to be put to ministers, the Minister of Communications intends to form a committee which will be charged with recommending a suitable framework plan through which to implement the government policy and set out a proper course of action."
