Freesheet "Israel Today" expansion delayed

A weekend edition still hasn’t left the planning stage, despite increasingly strong circulation during the week.

"Israel Today" continues to delay publication of a weekend edition, despite previous plans to launch after the Jewish New Year's holiday three months ago. Meanwhile, a TGI survey published yesterday, showed that circulation of the freesheet's weekday edition is increasing.

"Israel Today", owned by Sheldon Adelson, said in response, "We're continuing organization, including the hiring of employees, and logistics, for the publication of a weekend edition. We have not yet set the launch date."

Last August, sources at "Israel Today" said that the freesheet was moving up its plans and would publish a weekend edition after the holidays, in October. The sources added that the weekend edition would be twice the size of the weekday edition, and include three sections: news, a weekend supplement, and a politics supplement.

In November, following heavy losses by Adelson's Las Vegas Sands Corporation (NYSE: LVS), sources said that there was no connection between "Israel Today" and the condition of Las Vegas Sands, and that the investment in the freesheet and its activity would continue.

Yesterday, TGI's survey showed that "Israel Today" was in second place in terms of exposure rate, and was narrowing the gap with first-place "Yediot Ahronot" and widening the gap with "Ma'ariv".
