Israel Security Agency warns of online terror activity

The Israel Security Agency (Shin-Bet) warns Israelis to be "vigilant and cautious" when on the Internet.

The Israel Security Agency (Shin-Bet) has warned Israelis to be "vigilant and cautious" when using the Internet in view of increased online activity, especially on social networks, by terrorist organizations. The announcement came four months after Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, in which the Internet was an important tool in the battle between Israel and terrorist organizations.

The Israel Security Agency states that there have been a number of incidents in which terrorist organization approached Israeli citizens with recruitment offers or requests for classified information for pay. The agency says that the risk from this activity not only lies in concerns about leaks of classified information, but to the lives of Israelis tempted to meet a representative of a terrorist organization abroad in order to receive money. Such a meeting carries the risk of being kidnapped.

The Security Agency also warns that terrorist organizations are monitoring Israeli websites and social networks on which former IDF personnel from classified units are members in order to gather intelligence and security targets in Israel. The reason is that people on social networks tend to disclose a great deal of information, including personal information, to friends on these networks.
