Palestinians want independent mail service

The Palestinian Authority has the right to have Jordan handle its international mail, subject to a commercial agreement between the two.

The Palestinians want a divorce from Israel's mail service. Last Sunday, the joint Israel-Palestinian Authority Postal Committee met for the first time.

At the meeting, the Palestinians tabled a motion to implement a joint Israel-Palestinian Authority policy statement at the Universal Postal Union Congress in Geneva last year to transfer authority for postal services in the Palestinian Authority to Jordan from Israel.

Mail to and from the Palestinian Authority currently passes through Israel. Under Annex III (Civil Affairs) of the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip signed in Washington in September 1995, the Palestinian Authority has the right to have Jordan handle this mail, subject to a commercial agreement between the two.
