Bacterioscan starts clinical trials in US

The company recently raised $250,000 from a private investor in Israel, in addition to funding from the Chief Scientist.

Yozmot HaEmek Technological Incubator company Bacterioscan is to begin clinical trials of its product at the Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, as part of the registration process for marketing in the US.

Bacterioscan has developed an optical device for real-time detection of urinary-tract infections in order to insure proper and efficient treatment. The system is believed to be able to provide a instant diagnosis of test results, as opposed to the 48 hours that this process currently takes, thereby enabling earlier and more effective treatment with antibiotics. The device directs a laser beam at the urine sample, and characterizes cells by way of light refraction patterns. Unlike existing methods, Bacterioscan’s system does not require multiple cell sampling.

Bacterioscan was founded by former Technion Israel Institute of Technology scientist Dr. Jaime de la Zerda. It recently raised $250,000 from a private Israeli investor, in addition to $300,000 that was raised through its incubator Yozmot HaEmek. The company says it will need a total of $2 million to complete current clinical tests, regulatory procedures and the patenting of its product.
