Minister of Education Yuli Tamir has announced that Prof. Nissan Levitan has won the 2007 Israel Prize for economics. Levitan, 80, was one of the first researchers of modern economics in Israel. After studying at Oxford, he completed his Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and joined its economics department as a lecturer.

Levitan investigated the reasons for inflation in Israel during the late 1970s and early 1980s. His work influenced Israeli economists, especially at the Bank of Israel, where he was an adviser. He was a member of the team that stabilized the economy in 1985.

The Israel Prize committee said, “Prof. Levitan contributed to the creation of economic policy in Israel."

Levitan continues to publish academic articles for the Bank of Israel Research Department.
