IAI to unveil solar-powered UAV

IAI will also display its computerized fluid dynamics system for aircraft design.

Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) will unveil a solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at an aeronautical show tomorrow. The UAV has extended drawing on solar energy collected during the day for night operations.

IAI will also display its computerized fluid dynamics (CFD) system, which helps design the aerodynamics of aircraft. IAI used the system in the design of its new G150 Gulfstream executive jet, built together with Gulfstream Inc. Thanks to the system, the G150 has better performance than in the original design.

IAI said, “The software utilizes the computing power of 400 simultaneously working processors, handling complex calculations in 17 hours. Without this capability, these calculations would take 54 years.”

IAI will also present a model of a civilian passenger jet with air-to-air refueling capability. The company believes that global demand for air-to-air refueling will increase, and that civilian aircraft with this capability can be drafted for military use.
