Turkey still most popular holiday destination for Israelis

The US was the second most popular destination in August.

Turkey was the most popular holiday destination for Israelis, with 195,000 visitors in August 2007, 15% of total outgoing travelers, the Israel Airports Authority reports. The second most popular destination was the US, with 151,000 travelers, followed by France with 119,000, and Italy and Germany with 93,000 each.

El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. (TASE: ELAL) was the most popular airline for Israelis in August, carrying 430,000 of the 1.3 million passengers passing through Ben Gurion Airport. Turkish charter airline Onur Air carried 121,000 passengers, Luftahansa 42,000, Continental Airlines 34,000, Turkish Airlines and Alitalia 31,000 each, British Airways 25,000, Swiss International Airlines 23,000, and Austrian Airlines 22,000.

Ben Gurion Airport handled 6.8 million passengers in January-August, 12% more than the number handled in the corresponding period in 2006, and the same number as in 2005.
