MIC looks to profit from Kapp Surgical deal

Microdel Ideas Centers backed a minimally invasive surgical instrument.

Microdel Ltd. has signed a cooperation agreement with Kapp Surgical Instruments Inc., which will market and distribute in North America a retractor for neurosurgical procedures backed by Microdel Idea Center Ltd. (MIC).

MIC invested $100,000 in development of the retractor, and predicts tens of millions of dollars in revenue from it over the next five years. The retractor makes possible minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures without affecting brain tissues, while keeping even blood pressure in the cerebral walls, and preventing pressure within the skull.

The retractor is used to remove tumors and metastatis growths. Future applications are planned for orthopedic, urological, spinal, and cardiology procedures. Prof. David Michaeli, a neurosurgeon and former Soviet Army scientist, invented the device, and Prof. Zvi Rapport, a neurosurgeon at the Rabin Medical Center, participated in its development.

MIC is a bank for commercializing Israeli ideas in all fields. It team of experts locates and filters inventions, by testing the products' innovation and technical and commercial feasibility. Selected ideas are submitted to international corporations and product development companies for the sale of intellectual property rights.

MIC funds product development through the prototype or simulation stage, at which point it seeks a buyer for the product. The inventor is not required to invest time or money in the development stage, but gets a fixed percentage of sales, or a higher percentage in the event of an exit.
