Three hospitals turn to MCS device instead of medication

The company's machine has been shown to be more effective than medication in treating thrombosis.

Medical device company MCS Medical Compression Systems (DBN) Ltd. (TASE:MDCL) said yesterday that three hospitals had ordered its second generation device for use in orthopedic surgery. The newest version of the company's device is designed to serve as an alternative to the anticoagulants used to prevent thrombosis during surgery, as opposed to its first product which was used in conjunction with medication. Because of the saving on medication it offers, Medical Compression will be able to market the latest version of its device at a higher price.

Medical Compression completed a clinical trial of the device in June, which showed it to be equally effective and safer than the coagulants used to prevent thrombosis in orthopedic surgery. The three hospitals that have ordered the device have apparently accepted the findings of the trial and are willing to risk foregoing the use of coagulants - a decision that Medical Compression will view as an encouraging sign for the prospects for its business model and its chances of selling its products at premium prices. Medical Compression is the only one of the suppliers of medical devices for treating thrombosis whose device has been shown to be more effective than medication.

Medical Compression's share closed 3.5% higher yesterday.
