Histadrut threatens airport strike during holidays

The Histadrut today approved a labor dispute at the Civil Aviation Authority.

The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) is threatening to call a strike at Ben Gurion Airport during the Sukkot holiday, one of the periods of heaviest passenger traffic. The Histadrut trade union coordination committee today approved a labor dispute at the Israel Civil Aviation Authority, which means that a strike can go ahead after a two-week cooling off period.

The excuse for the labor dispute is the Ministry of Finance's refusal to approve the labor agreement recently reached between the Civil Aviation Authority's management and workers committee. "Globes" first reported a month ago that the Civil Aviation Authority workers committee agreed to 80 early retirements in exchange for the full-time hiring of 150 temporary workers, and a wage hike above the 5% public sector wage hike.

The Ministry of Finance says that it does not oppose the extra salaries in exchange for reform at the Civil Aviation Authority, including the early retirements, but that the Civil Aviation Authority employees must first accept the public sector labor agreement format.
