Home sales begin to stabilize

First quarter home sales were down 16% compared with the corresponding quarter.

The Central Bureau of Statistics today reported that new home sales were stable in February-March 2009, in trend figures, after falling between August 2007 and May 2008 and again between July 2008 and February 2009.

However, new home sales in the first quarter fell 16% compared with the corresponding quarter of 2008, to reach 2,959 units.

Petah Tikva had the most apartment sales in the first quarter, at 298, followed by Jerusalem with 228 apartment sales, and Netanya, with 222 apartment sales. Tel Aviv was in fifth place, with 204 apartment sales.

1,020 of the 1,140 new homes sold in March were still under construction. The 120 completed homes sold were built over the previous 15 months.
