January-April housing sales down 9%

4,011 new homes were sold in the first third of 2009, compared with 4,410 in the first third of 2008.

The number of houses and apartments sold in the January-April period this year was 9% lower than in the corresponding months of 2008, according to Central Bureau of Statistics figures released today. 4,011 new homes were sold in the first third of 2009, compared with 4,410 in the first third of 2008.

45% of new homes sold in January-April 2009 were in the central region, with 24% being sold in Tel Aviv. The biggest drop in sales was in Judea and Samaria, where just 84 new homes were sold in the first third of this year, compared with 130 in the first third of 2008.

The number of new homes for sale is in steady decline, reaching 8,860 at the end of April 2009, 10% fewer than at the end of April 2008.
