MK Tamir: Don't cut drug basket to fund dental care

Tamir's proposed bill is signed by 40 MKs from all sides of the political spectrum.

One week after Deputy Minister of Health Yaakov Litzman announced that dental treatment for children will be included in the public basket of health services for 2010, MK Yuli Tamir (Labor) has proposed a new bill designed to torpedo this move. Tamir's bill will prohibit use of the drug basket funds to finance other Ministry of Health plans.

Tamir's proposed bill is signed by 40 MKs from across the political spectrum including Likud MKs Yariv Levin, Miri Regev, Amnon Cohen and Carmel Shama, MK Moshe Mutz Matalon (Israel Beteinu), Kadima MKs Nachman Shai, Gideon Ezra, Avi Dichter, Israel Hasson, Yohanan Plessner and Yulia Shamalov Berkovich and Meretz MKs Haim Oron and Nitzan Horowitz.

Tamir believes that the bill will be approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation because of the strong opposition to transferring budgets out of the drug basket for other treatments. Various health associations and extra-parliamentary health organizations are expected are expected to join efforts to push Tamir's legislation through the Knesset.
