Registration begins for Hebrew domain names

The il suffix will soon have a Hebrew alternative as well.

It will soon be possible to type in addresses for websites in Hebrew. The Israel Internet Association(ISOC-IL) today announced that registration has opened for Hebrew domain names.

In the first stage Hebrew addresses will still end with the Latin suffix il but within a few months, after approval from the relevant bodies and completion of the process, the suffix will also be available in the Hebrew alternative. When all the approvals have been received then it will be possible to type in il websites in either Hebrew or Latin letters.

The registration process which started today will last three months to prevent subsequent legal disputes. During these three months companies and organizes can reserve a domain name. After the three months registration will be opened to the public at large and all domain names not previously reserved will be available.

Israel Internet Association VP Doron Shikmoni said, "We are part of a global process which is currently taking place. When the process is completed it will be possible for the first time to use non-Latin letters in the website address bar including Hebrew."

Other countries that have received international approval for non-Latin suffixes include: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, China and Hong Kong, Taiwan and Russia.
