Health Ministry: 1 in 3 Israelis will get cancer

In Israel, 28,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed annually, and 11,000 people die of the disease.

One in three Israelis will get cancer: 40% of Israeli Jewish men, a third of Jewish women, a third of Israeli-Arab men, and a quarter of Israeli-Arab women will get cancer, the Ministry of Health and the Israel Cancer Association announced today to mark International Cancer Day on February 4.

"In Israel, 28,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed annually, and 11,000 people die of the disease," states the report. The Cancer Association warned that, without immediate measures to fight the disease, cancer rates could rise by 80%, especially among the poor and middle class.

"The objective of World Cancer Day is to raise awareness of the need to intensify the global struggle against cancer, and to get this message to citizens in Israel and across the world: it is possible to halve the morbidity rate," said Cancer Association president Miri Ziv.
