World Council of Churches recommends divestment from Israel

The Anti-Defamation League condemned the WCC. The World Council of Churches is using the same tactics it pursued against South Africa.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), a Geneva-based roof organization of 347 Protestant and Orthodox Christian sects, has recommended that its members "give serious consideration” to divestment from companies aiding Israel in what the WCC refers to as Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

The WCC Central Committee declared, “Criticism of the policies of the Israeli government is not in itself anti-Jewish.”

The WCC is the second Christian roof organization to call on its members to adopt economic sanctions against Israel, in protest against Israel’s continued presence in the territories. The US Presbyterian sect, which has hundreds of churches across the US, decided last summer to consider a selective divestment from companies linked to Israel’s presence in the territories.

The New York-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL) yesterday opened a public campaign against the WCC. In a press release, the ADL called the WCC’s recommendation to divest from companies linked to Israel’s presence in the territories “a biased, one-sided interpretation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
