State Comptroller: Charge public employees for waste

Micha Lindenstrauss: Personal liability for wasting funds should not only be expected at local government.

"Everyone should be personally liable; every public employee who causes exorbitant waste of the state budget should pay, and not just local authority employees," said State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss today at the winter conference of the Institute of Internal Auditors in Israel.

Lindenstrauss said that there was no justification for imposing personal liability only on mayors, and that this sanction should also be applied in the central government. "This issue should apply to everyone. If someone wastes the state budget illegally, he should repay the money from his own pocket. This discrimination is out of place," he said.

"I know that there are difficulties in implementing this matter; I see them at local authorities. Obviously, this requires a lot of attention. It will be most effective in Israel's public administration, and will contribute toward the cleaning of the stables and fixing public administration."
