VocalTec's focus on Africa pays off

The VoIP solutions developer has signed a $1 million deal in Kenya.

VoIP and convergence solutions developer VocalTec Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq:VOCL) is reaping the rewards of its strategic focus on Africa. Kenya-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) Wananchi Ltd. has selected VocalTec’s VoIP solutions for the launch of the first triple-play service for enterprise and residential users in Kenya and Tanzania, under the SimbaNET and Zuku brands. The company did not disclose the size of the deal, but industry sources estimate it at almost $1 million.

VocalTec will provide its core VoIP product together with a wide range of supporting applications and prepaid billing solutions for voicemail, fax, conferencing, and other solutions.

VocalTec president and CEO Ido Gur said, “Our experience and product capabilities will help Wananchi to develop its triple-play business rapidly and cost-effectively... We look forward to leveraging our expertise to further assist Wananchi in continuing its future expansion plans into new markets and technologies."

VocalTec's share fell 2.9% on Nasdaq yesterday to $1.35, giving a market cap of $7.8 million.
